My Favourite Gelato in Verona: Il Mustacchio in San Zeno

If you ask me where I go for gelato in Verona, my answer is Il Mustacchio. I often stop there after a photo session to get some energy back, but I go with my family too. There’s usually a reason. And if there isn’t, gelato is a good enough one.

They have two shops in Verona. The one in San Zeno, in Piazza Corrubbio, is closer for me, so that’s where you’ll usually find me. It’s easy to get to on foot or by bike, and it gives you a reason to walk a little beyond the busiest tourist streets. I always think it’s worth seeing this side of Verona too, where people are simply going about their day.

The two brothers who own it, Mattia and Mirko, are always there when I visit. They’re lovely, easy to chat with, and often remember your favourite flavours. It makes going back feel familiar.

And you can taste the flavours before choosing. I take this part quite seriously. Sometimes I’ve tried so many that I’m practically full before I’ve even ordered my cone. Somehow, I still manage.

The flavours change with the seasons, which doesn’t make choosing any easier. On my last visit, they had fig, and in autumn there’s pumpkin. I like going in and seeing what’s new, even if I end up with an old favourite.

My favourite gluten-free, egg-free and vegan gelato

They have gluten-free cones and plenty of gluten-free, egg-free and vegan flavours. There’s granita too, as well as semifreddo cakes. I also love their coffee with gelato, especially after a shoot when I feel like having both.

If you’re spending a few days in Verona, take a walk over to San Zeno and stop by. Say hello to the brothers, try a few flavours, and take your time choosing. I certainly do.

P.S. While writing this post, I was scrolling through my photos and remembered the best vegan and gluten-free gelato I’ve had—at Fior di Gusto in Trento. If you’re heading that way, give it a try. It’s not that far from Verona!
