Croatia & Slovenia – from holiday to roadtrip
After
hiking in the Alps
we wanted to relax somewhere by the sea. Since there was an outbreak of measles we couldn’t go to
our favourite place in Italy
. Since we love sandy beaches it looked like there is only one option – a holiday resort. However, everything changed on our way from the Alps.
We had packed our outdoor jackets and shoes and we were heading back to Prague when my sister called me. She had booked an apartment in Croatia for her family and friends. Accidentally it was on a sandy beach island. And by coincidence there was an extra room for us. So we turned the car and changed the destination to Pag, an island in Croatia.
There were just three teeny-tiny problems: we didn’t have enough summer and beach clothes, the accommodation was available in three days and our camera memory card was full.
As usually problems solve themselves.
On our first stop in Slovenia there was a Lidl store next to the parking lot where we bought some 5€ T-shirts, a bottle of suntan lotion and a beach tent for our son Emil.
Then we found an unbelievable last minute offer on booking.com for an apartment by the beach for the next three days.
And finally, we gave our camera time to rest after exhausting time in Austria so there will not be many pictures in this blogpost :). Sorry!
The drive to Croatia was really romantic, we drove by the sea on rocky coastline and then had to use a ferry to the island Pag. My Instastories were feeling happy :). We spent three full days of doing nothing and eating local food in a small village of Vidalici. There was literally nothing else you could do.

On the day my sister arrived we planned to move to their apartment. When the house owner found out that we were coming as well, she sniffed a new business opportunity. She said we couldn’t sleep in this free room and tried to push us into booking another apartment. However, we didn’t like this approach so we just said ‘hello’ to my sister, we had a lunch together and then we said ‘goodbye’ to the island Pag.
Since we had nowhere to sleep we decided to explore some other places in Croatia. We wanted to go to the Medulin beach but it was totally full. So we just had the best grilled fish ever in Salt and Pepper restaurant and then we continued to Rovinj. We found a good deal for a hotel room on the island St. Katarina in Rovinj. But we were quite surprised when the navigation brought us to the marina where we were supposed to leave our car. We just took our suitcase and a stroller and we were brought to the hotel by a small boat. Here I just had to wake up my camera because of the great views from the island. Beside the yummy food and relaxing by the sea we spent evenings on the beach bar listening to live music, drinking crazy expensive wine and enjoying the view of Rovinj old town. We stayed there only two days but the island was so small that two days were enough.

At that time we realised that we spent as much time on the road as on the beach and our holiday has changed to a roadtrip. So we said ‘Let’s make it count!’ and we added another destination to our trip – Bled, Slovenia.
Bled surprised us. Many other people had similar idea so it was not as calm as we expected. After spending time by the tranquil seas (Wörthersee and Bodensee) we found ourselves in a vibrant lake town. It was full of Slovenian and American tourists. We had a hotel room by the lake with a great view but at the first night we could hardly sleep because of the parties. The next days we decided to visit Bohinj lake with waterfalls which are not so well known but it was also quite crowded. Next time I would prefer coming here off season. Luckily in the morning the Bled lake was calm and we could enjoy a walk around it. After taking the last pictures we sat in the car and drove to the last stop of our roadtrip – back home.
